Preventive DentistryKeeping your teeth healthy can be difficult. There are so many things that can cause dental injuries and illnesses. Cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and traumatic injuries are all common problems. Thankfully, with a little time and preventive dental care, your risk of developing these dental issues can be significantly reduced!

Here at Coyne Dentistry, we use a variety of preventive dentistry treatments and techniques to keep your mouth healthy and prevent problems from developing in the first place.

What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry aims to protect your smile from injury, decay, and illness. To do this, we provide several treatments to strengthen and support your teeth and gums.

Our preventive dental services include:

Most of our preventive services are simple and cost-efficient. They are very effective at preventing illnesses like cavities and gum disease from developing. By investing in preventive care, you can avoid having to deal with painful, costly dental issues down the road.

What Does the Exam Include?

Here at Coyne Dentistry, we believe that identifying potential problems before they have time to develop is one of the most important parts of preventive dentistry. During your examination, your dentist will thoroughly check your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and facial muscles for signs of infection or decay.

If necessary, your dentist may recommend X-rays or intraoral imaging to check hard-to-reach spots. Because it is so important to catch oral cancer early, we always include a cancer screening during routine cleanings.

Our examinations allow us to catch these things early and treat them before they develop into a bigger problem.

How Do Dental Sealants & Fluoride Treatments Help?

Dental sealants and topical fluoride treatments are simple, effective treatments that can strengthen your teeth and prevent decay.

Sealants are made of thin layers of resin which are painted over the chewing surface of the teeth. These parts of your teeth are full of tiny cracks and crevices that are hard to clean. Over time, bacteria and food particles can collect in these spots and cause cavities. Sealants shield your teeth from bacteria while making it easier to brush.

Fluoride is a safe, naturally-occurring mineral. It can be found in most dental products like toothpaste and mouth wash. Some cities even add fluoride to their drinking water. This material is harmless in these small doses. Fluoride works to strengthen your enamel and fight tooth decay. If you do not receive enough fluoride from your dental products or drinking water, we may recommend an additional fluoride treatment.

Both of these treatment options are quick, inexpensive, and effective! Although we usually recommend these treatments for children, they are great for adults as well.
